Question: Any opinion on the demanding movie "damage"?
(Posted by: aphraar on 2010-03-12 01:35:08)
I wonder what people's opinions are of the quite demanding movie "Damage " with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. I'm not sure whether to post this here in "movies " or rather in "psychology ". BTW: P. and Rob, sorry to hide away. My PC is being "worked on " at the moment. I'll be back next week. |

I did not get a chance to see the movie but I read the plot from Wikipedia: “Dr. Stephen Fleming, a British Member of Parliament, is seduced by his son's girlfriend Anna Barton. Their affair intensifies as Stephen and Anna meet for sexual trysts in various locations. Stephen becomes obsessed with Anna to the point where he is willing to leave his wife, Ingrid, and destroy his relationship with his son, Martyn, in order to be with her. Anna dissuades him from these drastic steps, reassuring him that he will always have access to her even while she is with Martyn. After becoming engaged to Anna, Martyn catches her and his father having sex in a flat that Anna has rented to serve as their trysting place. The shock of the discovery causes Martyn to stumble backwards and fall over a stairway railing, plummeting to his death. Stephen is disgraced, loses his wife and his seat in Parliament, and is relegated to a life of isolation, in which he still seems to be obsessed with Anna.” The movie sounds intriguing to watch much like the “The French Lieutenant's Woman” or “The English Patient” but based on what I read about the movie, it just sounds tragic because like the other two movies it ends up with someone being alone or someone being killed when it could have been avoided. The plot of the movie somehow parallels our US Senator Ted Kennedy's life – the adulterer who murdered a young woman over 40 years ago, alcoholic, and ended up divorcing his first wife. He was very lucky to live that long (died in 2009) and got away with a lot things and still held a position in the senate. I do not know why the people of Massachusetts did not vote him out in the early 1970’s. Well, that is another story. As a person with my life experiences, I just could not put myself in that situation. I do not understand men sometimes. If they want to have their sexual trysts then just stay single and have sex with prostitutes. Marriage and parenthood are areas that cannot tolerate adultery. A lot of men around the world just do not understand this – especially the religious hypocrites. I have seen it from the sidelines and it really destroys families at every socio-economic level. This movie’s plot does reflect reality but in a tragic way. Even Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” had redemption in the movie (no adultery was ever committed in the movie). Well, that is my opinion on this movie and how it reflects reality. I hope to see a movie that is the antithesis to this movie. Anyway, did anyone see “Julie & Julia”? Wasn’t that a fun movie? It takes place in Queens. |

I watched this movie and found it quite a demanding exercise. If it is not a porn, then what is? The movie focusses on explicit sex, and the plot is secondary and as predictable as the whole lot of them. I liked what the answerer who found allusions to Ted Kennedy's life said, though. |
