Both. I trade in individual stocks when I feel like I have a good understanding of the company and the industry involved. I'm well in tune with the tech industry, so I feel comfortable investing in tech stocks. I'm willing to risk more in exchange for better returns. If there's a sector that I'm interested in but don't follow closely, I'll invest in a mutual fund and trust the fund manager to research the individual companies. So in biotech, financial services, real estate, and so on, I have mutual fund investments. I keep in mind that mutual fund fees eat into my profits, but that's the price I pay for having someone else do more of the work for me.
